Medical Disclaimer

MyBodyMath publishes general educational information and estimating calculators. Nothing on this site is medical advice, and nothing here is a substitute for care from a qualified professional who knows your history.

Not medical advice

The content and calculators on MyBodyMath are provided for general informational and educational purposes only. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition, and they do not create a clinician–patient relationship of any kind. No one who writes for this site is acting as your physician, dietitian, or trainer.

Always seek the advice of your physician or another qualified health provider with any question you have about a medical condition, your diet, your medication, or an exercise programme. Never disregard professional medical advice, or delay seeking it, because of something you read here. If you think you may have a medical emergency, contact your doctor or emergency services immediately.

Our calculators produce estimates, not measurements

Every number this site returns comes from a population-level equation, and every such equation carries error. Resting metabolic rate predicted by the Mifflin-St Jeor equation lands within 10 percent of a measured value for most adults but can be meaningfully wrong for any individual. Circumference-based body fat estimates typically differ from a DEXA scan by several percentage points. One rep max formulas drift as the number of repetitions rises. Activity multipliers and MET values are averages across many people, not a reading from your body.

Treat every output as a starting hypothesis to test against real-world results over two to four weeks, not a fact about your physiology.

Who should not rely on these numbers

The equations here were derived largely from healthy adults. Please speak to a professional rather than using these calculators to guide decisions if you are:

  • under 18 years old, or an older adult with significant loss of muscle mass;
  • pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • living with, or recovering from, an eating disorder or disordered eating;
  • managing diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney or liver disease, cardiovascular disease, or any condition affecting metabolism or fluid balance;
  • taking medication that affects appetite, weight, or metabolic rate;
  • an athlete at the extremes of body composition, where general-population equations break down;
  • preparing for or recovering from surgery, including bariatric surgery.

If you are struggling with food, eating, or body image, please reach out to a qualified professional or a national eating disorder helpline. Calorie calculators can be harmful in that context, and we would rather you close the tab.

No guarantee of outcome

Bodyweight responds to energy balance on average and over time, but individual results vary with genetics, hormones, sleep, stress, medication, adherence, water balance, and factors nobody has measured yet. We make no representation or warranty that following any number, plan, or suggestion on this site will produce a particular result.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, MyBodyMath and its authors accept no liability for any loss, injury, or damage arising from the use of, or reliance on, the information and calculators on this site. You use the site and act on its output at your own discretion and risk. Your use of MyBodyMath is also governed by our Terms of Use.
